Sledding Hills

WEST MILTON COMMUNITY PARK

Probably the most famous sledding hill in Miami County, and one of the longest, is at West Milton Community Park. The hill starts at Miami Street and drops quickly into the Stillwater River valley below. It’s a fun, fast ride, and, unlike almost every other place on this list, there’s a staircase to climb back up to the top.

PIQUA - MOTE PARK

Located at Gordon Street, families have been sledding at Mote Park for generations. It is a modest 35 degree angle, giving sledders a long, safe run to the bottom of the hill - and a fairly easy climb back to the top.

TIPP CITY

The levee system in Tipp City provides numerous spots to sled. However, the safest place is at the east end of Plum and Walnut streets, near Canal Lock Park, which has parking and is accessible from Main Street. Unlike other parts of the levee, where trees line the bottom of the hill, several spots near Canal Lock Park open up into a prairie. Add to this a very steep grade, and the hill provides both speed and distance. It is, however, more challenging than other places on this list to climb back up!

TROY

The main sledding hills in Troy are located along the Great Miami River levee between Adams Street and North Market Street and behind Troy Memorial Stadium. Archer Park is also popular and features a small but steep hill. Another location (considered to be less safe) is near the water treatment plant on Staunton Road in Troy. There are several new locations to sled at Treasure Island Park.

STILLWATER PRAIRIE RESERVE
Located at 9750 Rt.185 near Covington, this Miami County park features a sledding hill at the Overlook Pond.

MOOSE HILL IN SIDNEY

Moose Hill is located at Moose Golf Course, 1200 Broadway Ave. in Sidney and has a number of sledding options.

A large, central mound on the golf course has two ways to go – one long, steep hill (nicknamed “Suicide Hill”) and another decent drop on the other side. There are other hills where very small children can feel safe as well.

KISER LAKE STATE PARK IN ST. PARIS
One of several state parks in the region to offer sledding in the winter, plus ice skating, cross-country skiing, ice fishing and ice boating.

TAYLORSVILLE METROPARK IN VANDALIA

Located on the east side of Brown School Road, south of US 40 in Vandalia, this nearby hill spans about 500 feet, making it one of the longer, faster hills in the region and worth the short drive from home.

ENGLEWOOD METROPARK

Englewood MetroPark’s sledding hill is located in the West Park. Use the 100 E. National Road entrance (U.S. 40 at State Route 48) and follow the park road for parking. There is a short walk through the woods to the hill from the parking lot. The entrance to the wooded trail is signed at the south end of the parking lot. There’s lots of room to have multiple launches for races or stunt competitions.

COMMUNITY GOLF COURSE IN KETTERING

(a.k.a Suicide Hill)

Located next to Hills & Dales MetroPark at Community Golf Course, 2917 Berkely St., Kettering, this sledding destination has been the stuff of legend for decades. A very long, fast and wide hill draws visitors from throughout the Miami Valley. Side hills are even crazier. Be safe at this one!

WRIGHT MEMORIAL PARK IN FAIRBORN

Spanning nearly 1,000 feet, only Suicide Hill in Kettering rivals the distance of this sledding hill at Wright Memorial Park, located at 2380 Memorial Road. Easy parking and access a plus at this location.

LAKE LORAMIE STATE PARK IN MINSTER
The state park offers sledding, ice skating, ice fishing and boating and snowmobiling.

Tubing Parks

VALLEYS EDGE SNOW TUBING IN NEW PARIS
This tubing park is located at 8295 St. Rt. 121 in New Paris in Preble County. Regular hours are 5-9 p.m. Thursday; 5-10 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday. Admission for two hours of tubing is $12 for those 4-6 and $20 for those 7 and up. An additional hour is $5. The Family Rate is $65. Along with regular hours, there are special events planned. Learn more HERE.

AVALANCHE PARK

Located at Mad River Mountain Ski Resort (pictured above) in nearby Zanesville (about an hour away), Avalanche Park is “Ohio’s largest tubing park” with ten lanes all stretching more than a thousand feet. Avalanche Park is open 5-9:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Check their website for other open dates, including holiday weekends. The cost is $25 for three hours of sledding. Concessions are available at the lodge. Plan your visit at www.skimadriver.com.

SEVEN SPRINGS MOUNTAIN RESORT

Although located nearly 300 miles from Miami County (about 4 ½ hours), Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Pennsylvania can make an excellent family vacation or weekend getaway. Along with some of the best skiing in the region, the resort's sledding park is one of the largest in the Eastern United States. It has 11 chutes that jet down a massive hill (pictured above at right). Even better, conveyor belts pull sledders back to the top of the hill. The cost ranges between $20 and $31, depending on your age and which day(s) you visit. This is for unlimited sledding. Open 7 days a week. Plan your visit at www.7springs.com.

PERFECT NORTH SLOPES

This tubing park at Perfect North Slopes (near the gambling boats in Indiana) features 23 lanes, including “super lanes” for adults, and is open to all ages seven days a week. At 1,200 feet, the tubing hills are very long. The cost varies based on time and age and ranges in price from $22-$32, with additional hours available for $5. Plan your visit at www.perfectnorth.com.

SNOW TRAILS

Not as steep as other tubing parks on this list, Snow Trails (located near Mansfield) is better suited for those who enjoy speed. The cliff-like drop-off for tubers means immediate action. Open Thursday through Sunday and the cost is $25 for two hours and $15 for children 5 and under. Plan your visit at www.snowtrails.com.
