Tippecanoe Middle School Power of the Pen Team Makes School History

TMS Power of the Pen makes school history! So proud of these young people and the coaches!
For those of you who don't know, Tippecanoe Middle School has had a Power of the Pen team for many years. The team consists of six 7th graders and six 8th graders who practice weekly and go to three competitions a year--district, regional, and state.
The writers are given three cold creative prompts (ones they have never seen before) and have 40 minutes per round to create a story centered around each prompt. Writers have to earn their right to make it to the next round.
Due to this global pandemic, the writers lost most of their season last year. This year, Power of the Pen went virtual which meant that we met at TMS for each competition and used chromebooks to compete. In the past, we have competed at different schools, and this year's state tournament was scheduled to be held at Otterbein University.
At the state awards ceremony last night, we found out that the TMS Power of the Pen team won their FIRST state title in school history, beating out 166 other teams for the honor.
Additionally, Lauren Huber was one of ten writers in the state to win a Platinum Pen award for her story "Harmony" which she wrote at regionals. I read this to our Power of the Pen team last month, and we had no words once we had finished. It was amazing.
The state winning team consists of 7th graders Avery Anderson, Caroline Kaibas, Lucy McClure, Alyssa Siders, Belle Stanford and 8th graders Elliana Denton, Sarah George, Maddie Gold, Lauren Huber, and Morgan Wolbers.
We are so proud of these girls. Please join Brittasha Thompson (7th grade coach) and me in congratulating them for a job well done! We are still in shock today, but we are two VERY proud coaches.
