PIQUA - On May 22, 2022, Piqua High School student, Blake Nelson, jumped into action when he saw a man struggling to stay afloat as he was swept downriver. Blake followed the subject downriver for approximately 100 yards before catching up with him and helping him to safety. Blake's heroic actions and quick response to the situation is why Officer Chris Walters nominated Blake for the 2022 Jan Mulder award. A failure to act or a delay in action by Blake, could have led to a tragic outcome stated Officer Walters.

On Tuesday, July 19, Blake Nelson received the award during the city commission meeting. Present at the ceremony was Piqua Police Chief, Rick Byron, and Officer Chris Walters, seen in the first photo, as well as Piqua Board of Education Member, Kelly McMaken, and Piqua City Schools Superintendent, Dwayne Thompson, shown in the second photo. Blake was also surrounded by many family members who celebrated the recognition.

Congratulations, Blake!
