Silent Wings Trail Adventure at Brukner Nature Center – month of January

• SILENT WINGS TRAIL ADVENTURE:  The new year brings with it long dark nights, the coldest temperatures of the year, and owls beginning their breeding season!  While most of us humans enjoy hunkering down over the winter away from the cold and wind, owls are covered from head to toe with warm insulating feathers making January a great time to find a mate and begin the nesting process.  Take a hike at BNC this January and search for three owl cutouts placed in the forest.  Bring your smart phone to learn more about the owls and take a picture with each. Then email the pics to us at or stop inside the Interpretive Building to show us.  Anyone who takes photos with all three owls will receive a bag of bird seed as their prize!  You may even see your photo on our Facebook or Instagram!

Brukner Nature Center’s PEEP Winter Session 1 – Registration is Open

• PEEP WINTER 1 SESSION:   Imagine a world where all children play, learn and grow with nature in their everyday lives. Let them spend their days outside using their imagination. Let them be free to hide in a pile of leaves like a woodland box turtle or silently fly like an owl looking for a mouse.  Give the child in your life the gift to play, learn and grow with nature in their everyday life!  Sign your preschooler up for the Winter 1 Session of PEEP that will run from January 11th – February 18th.  Preschoolers will meet once a week for six weeks and discover a different nature-related topic each week filled with discoveries as we share stories, encounter wildlife and explore the outdoors!  Class sizes will be limited to 10 children and the classes will be 1.5 hours of mostly outdoor activity, so always dress for the weather - winter coat, boots, gloves, etc.  PEEP is geared specifically for children ages 3 – 5 years old, who are potty-trained and not attending Kindergarten (or being homeschooled for Kindergarten).  Openings are still available for Thursday or Friday mornings from 9:30 – 11:00am or Thursday afternoons from 1:00 – 2:30pm.  Cost for PEEP Winter Session 1 is $55 for BNC Members per child and $75 for Nonmembers per child  (CASH OR CHECK ONLY).  Please follow these pre-registration guidelines:  Email and provide your child's name, age, birthdate, and phone number.  List your top 3 choices for class (see options stated in article).  WAIT for an email to confirm your child is now registered and which day they will be attending.  If we do not have the minimum number of kids registered for a particular day, your child may be moved to your second or third choice of class.  You will then have 3 days to mail a check or drop off payment - CASH OR CHECK ONLY!  If you are dropping of payment, you may leave payment in the drop-box by our front door.  If payment is not received within 3 days, your child’s spot will open for another child.  Or you may mail payments to:  Brukner Nature Center, 5995 Horseshoe Bend Rd., Troy, OH 45373.  Withdrawal Policy:  Reimbursement of payment is not available for PEEP cancellation within two (2) weeks of the start of PEEP.  Any cancellation occurring more than 2 weeks prior to the start of PEEP, will receive a 50% refund.

Homeschool Nature Club at Brukner Nature Center – January 19th

• HOMESCHOOL NATURE CLUB:  Did you know that studies have found kids who spend more time in nature are generally healthier, happier, and test better in school than those who don’t?   Register your 5 – 11 year-old homeschooled student for a morning or afternoon of discovery on the 3rd Wednesday of the month!  Staff naturalists have developed hands-on fun and educational lesson plans, using live wildlife and outdoor exploration!  We still have spots available for our afternoon session which runs from 2:00 – 4:00pm.  Cost for BNC Members: $5/child each month and nonmembers: $8/child each month.  Pre-registration is required and deadline is Tuesday, January 18th by noon.  Pre-registration Guidelines: Call Monday – Friday at 937-698-6493 or email  WAIT for an email to confirm you are pre-registered for your chosen time/months (see above).  You will then have 3 days to mail a check.   CASH OR CHECK ONLY!  Currently, spots only available for the afternoon session. Brukner Nature Center’s Winter Night Adventure “Secret Communications” – February 18th

• WINTER NIGHT ADVENTURE:  Have you ever heard a bird singing and wondered what they might be trying to say?  Animals can communicate many different things through sound, smell, and body language.  We have learned to decipher some of these messages, like a male barred owl calling “Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all!” might mean he’s trying to attract a mate!  Others forms of communication still remain a mystery.  Join us for a fun evening of discovery and exploration on Friday, February 18th from 7:00 – 9:00pm as we learn more about our amazing wildlife!  This program is for kids in grades K – 4th and is a drop-off program but pre-registration is required to attend.  *Remember to dress for the weather as we will be spending a large amount of time outside!   Program fee is only $20/child for BNC Members or $30/child for nonmembers (cash or check).  ATTENTION SCOUT LEADERS!  Scout packs/troops are also invited to pre-register for this public program.  Please call for scout pricing for your pack/troop (minimum of 6 scouts must attend in order to be placed in one group with your leader)!  Registration and payment deadline is Wednesday, February 16 by 5:00pm.  Please call (937) 698-6493 or e-mail to pre-register.
